After a long wait, there is finally a really stunning, well run hotel in The Deccan / Vijayanagar – one of the great areas / sites in India both historically, visually and topographically. A much needed and exciting ‘first’! With the opening of Evolve Back Kamalapura Palace this is an area that should now be high on everyone’s ‘India hit list’.
Going back to the glorious days of the 14th century Vijayanagara Empire, Hampi was once described as “the best provided city in the world”. With stunning rugged forests and the famous Hampi ‘boulders’ forming its backdrop, Kamalapura Palace is located just 4 km from this UNESCO World Heritage Site and with the recent opening of Hampi Airport, it is sure to become a hugely popular destination at last.
Kamalapura Palace is a lovely, newly built hotel in classic Vijyanagar style, with oodles of space both inside and out. 46 huge rooms and suites are in the main building which is home to beautiful courtyards, a dining room, a stunning pool and large terrace – with plenty of sunbeds!
Superb villas with private pools and gardens are more like houses than hotel rooms! The bedrooms are also immensely spacious and airy, many with balconies and large sitting rooms and all have state of the art bathrooms. The décor is simple, classic and similar throughout, with rich colours and wood offset against whitewashed walls.
The cuisine here is wonderfully varied and the staff aim to cater to your every need. Offering both Continental and Indian, Vijayanagara inspired menus, dining here is a treat and is in either a stylish more formal restaurant or in a more relaxed environment, not to mention the evening poolside BBQ’s - there’s something for all here. One dining room, a lofty, open sitting area, an excellent Ayurvedic spa and an extremely well stocked shop are all in another building just a short stroll away from the main building. They have in house, highly knowledgeable, well-trained historians who conduct evening briefings on the wonders of Hampi, prior to exploring this huge site.
The overall feeling here is of space and ‘room to breathe’. The large premises is surrounded by what will very soon be stunning gardens – it only takes one monsoon for plants to take off here – and it’s a joy to be able to come back and rest in such style and comfort, taking a lunchtime break from exploring. There’s plenty to do here for long stay guests, aside from discovering the wonders of Hampi or pottering around the incredibly pretty countryside and villages on foot or by bicycle.
Hampi is only a 6 hour drive from Bangalore and also fits well with Mysore, Belur and Halebid. Ultimately, however, Hampi provides the perfect beginning or end to a tour of the Deccan, taking in Badami, Aihole, Pattadakal, Bijapur, Gulbarga and Hyderabad.
This large, rambling hotel has more than enough space for arranging a special event and all the equipment to do it – against a backdrop of the famous boulders that dominate the area. Possibly too big for a takeover so more suited to larger events and weddings. However, sections of hotel could be taken in their entirety and partying by the pool here would be something to remember! Limited local entertainment possible.
