This magical little plantation house is the brainchild of Australian born Don, and Indian born Mini Van de Pol. Having travelled extensively in India they had a yearning to build their own dream home / hotel and returned to Muvattapuzha to Mini’s parents’ home. Urged on by others to build and having such a perfection location, her former home, Mukulath House (meaning ‘fearlessnesss and to show many signs of independence) became what is now The Indian Summer House. Don and Mini dreamed of cool verandahs to give respite from the heat and shelter from the rain; of traditional Malayali design but with modern tweaks; of separate areas and rooms for different moments, all linked by covered walkways; of spacious rooms with lots of privacy; of a beautiful pool sitting in a leafy garden; and, with the help of an empathic architect, they achieved their dream. Today The Indian Summer House is the perfect modern take on a traditional Keralan plantation house and it’s a warm, friendly, intimate joy to stay in.
Nestled amidst the lush greenery, amongst swaying palms and close to local backwaters and the Muvattapuzha River, this unique home embodies the epitome of tranquillity and simple luxury – a verdant oasis just a short distance from the bustling town of Muvattapuzha. The design reflects a seamless blend of traditional and modern elements, creating an ambiance that is both elegant and comfortable, whilst the architecture is characterized by its distinctive sloping roofs, extensive use of wood, and open spaces that merge with the natural surroundings. The traditional sloping roof, known as "nalukettu," serves a functional purpose by providing natural ventilation and protection from the tropical climate. The use of locally sourced wood, such as teak and rosewood, lends a warm and inviting feel to the interiors, while also showcasing the rich craftsmanship of the region.
The 5 spacious, lofty rooms and suites in the villa are all very different but each combines a masterful fusion of traditional Malayali aesthetics and modern comfort. Intricately carved wooden furniture, vibrant textiles, and antique artefacts adorn the living spaces, exuding a sense of timeless elegance and cultural richness. The use of natural materials and earthy tones creates a harmonious connection with the natural surroundings, while modern amenities ensure you want for nothing.
Spend time here relaxing by the pool surrounded by tropical vegetation; enjoy a relaxing Ayurvedic spa treatment; borrow the bicycles and explore the area on 2 wheels or on foot; take boat trips downriver; enjoy sumptuous traditional home-cooked food; practice yoga listening to the sound of nature; enjoy one of their renowned cooking demonstrations – a real hit with everyone; or simply relax on a shady verandah with a book – a bit of time out in a hectic itinerary.
The Indian Summer House is the most lovely, inviting, relaxed home away from home, where you are likely to make friends for life; restore your energy; revive your soul and get under the skin of Kerala!
Being only 5 rooms and very much a home, this is an ideal place for a group of friends to take over for a special, intimate moment together. Don and Mini can pretty well make anything happen and will personally oversee it all.
