Manvar Kumat is the quintessential desert retreat, lying in 100 private acres of indigenous flora and a cluster of dunes, just 1^1/2 hours west of Jodhpur. Founded by passionate conservationist, desert lover and wildlife man, Moti Singh Rathore has created a heavenly place to escape to in the Great Thar Desert. The village of Shergarh is known for its warrior predecessors, carpenters and equestrians, along with myriad communities around and about who have learned to survive the harsh desert climate over the years. These communities guard and protect the flora and fauna of the region as though their lives depend on it and others are masters of archery, music and art. A stay here allows you to glimpse and learn a little about life in the desert as well as enjoying a gloriously restful time in one of 11 exceptional tented rooms.

Surrounded by the shifting desert sands and scrubland, the ‘tents’ are a haven of space and luxury. Each is furnished beautifully with reclaimed timber floors, wonderful beds and linen and superb bathrooms with both indoor and outdoor showers – nothing better than showering under a desert moon! The large windows allow the outside to come inside and each has a deep, shaded verandah with seating so comfortable you are liable to spend your whole time lying back having a snooze, reading a good book or watching desert life unfold before you. On colder days the tents have an equally comfy, large seating area inside! Stone pathways lead you around the camp, with 3 ‘tents’ being a little removed from others – perfect for a private gathering. The public areas are home to a glorious swimming-pool, a pretty restaurant which serves up delectable Rajasthani dishes, and a wonderful bar where you’re likely to spend many happy hours chatting about your day. It’s airy and open in the warmer months and cosy and inviting in the winter months!

The whole camp is furnished in beautiful, soft, subtle earthy, desert colours; and the lovely yellow, Jaisalmer stone and wood predominate! The overall effect is incredibly easy on the eye and soft to touch – feel appeal at its best - and one instantly feels calm walking into this unique camp. It simply blends into its environment leaving virtually no visual footprint.
