Mharo Khet, Nr. Jodhpur, Rajasthan

Mharo-Khet, Nr. Jodhpur, Rajasthan (K)

Mharo Khet is the brainchild of Rajnush Agarwal and is a magical, inspirational place just 45 mins outside Jodhpur. His goal has been to prove that you can turn once degenerated, barren land into a productive source of incredible veg, herbs, flowers, spices, fruit and fungi - an experimental farm growing produce in what is effectively sand and bad dirt, with no pesticides and no soil enhancers, they use plants to regenerate and the result is superb. It is the epitome of sustainable farming and traditional methods of pest control and fertigation.

For those wanting an enlightening outing from Jodhpur and one of the most delicious lunches or dinners (vegetarian) to be had in Rajasthan, add this to your visit. Walk around the fields seeing all crops and flowers; enter the giant poly tunnels where literally every conceivable vegetable is growing in neat rows - no insects allowed in so pollination is done manually by the staff shaking the stems; go into the drying tent to see all the chillies, parsley, camomile, tomatoes, mushrooms being dried. If at all interested in horticulture, sustainable farming and nature, this is the place to come to learn the benefits and challenges of chemical-free agriculture, along with best practices for cultivating native and exotic produce. After 11/2 hour’s walk you sit down in a beautiful, secluded spot, at a perfectly laid table, to feast on a delicious 7-9 course lunch/dinner of small bites prepared by revolutionary and delightful Chef Ishan. Using only ingredients from the farm, he produces THE most delicious vegetarian food to be had in the state.

They have recently added 10 stunningly lovely cottages so nature lovers / those who’ve had enough of cities, now have the most heavenly place to base themselves outside the mighty fort city of Jodhpur. The cottages are stand alone and well-spaced out for maximum privacy - state of the art, hugely spacious, and looking out onto the farmland. Each has two verandahs for making the most of sunset and sunrise, a sitting room and superb bathroom and they are designed with huge windows to let in maximum light. Furnished with soft, earthy, desert hues, they simply blend into their surroundings. The interiors are chic, elegant, calming and contemporary but look to traditional, rural Rajasthan for their inspiration, being hand-crafted by the local artisans - the stone and wood furniture is all made locally, as are the curios and rugs. They’ve used nothing but the best in terms of linen, amenities and the finish of the furniture which is blissfully soft to the touch. There is a beautifully lit dining room with comfortable seating and a great poolside, al fresco café and bar - you don’t have to drag yourself too far from your sunbed and look to get a drink or delicious snack! The pool itself is superb with plenty of space and heated - one of the few in Rajasthan!

Whilst here you will never be bored! Not only is it an extraordinary culinary experience - ‘farm to table / eat what you grow’ being its mantra, but it also allows you time to relish the pastoral elements of the area. Spend time in the peaceful gardens, have a shave under a shady tree, or practice yoga out in the fresh air. For those keen to come away with a new talent, learn how to cook some of the hotel’s exceptional dishes, learn the art of pottery or miniature painting, or even weave your own charpoy (daybed). For the more active there are wonderfully curated educational walks through the fields and visits to nearby block printing villages; and a drive out to a sand dune for sundowners and a BBQ in the desert is a must!

The experiences at Mharo Khet are run by Saajhi’s who are partners, collaborators and friends - this says it all! They make it all work and will look after you to perfection, curating whatever experience you are after, guiding you and ensuring you have a truly memorable moment at Mharo Khet. A truly uplifting place where to immerse yourself in the vibrant culture and tradition of the area whilst staying in the lap of luxury.

Eco / environmental / responsible tourism policy

Mharo Khet is entirely chemical-free, and employs regenerative practices. More than 95% of what one eats at the farm comes fresh from their fields, harvested only a few minutes ago.

The team is mostly from the villages around them. Together, they have created a space that is rich in culture and tradition; but crafted in ways that were forgotten. At Mharo Khet, sustainability isn’t a buzzword - it’s their way of life. Nestled on the edge of the Thar Desert, they work with nature, not against it, using smart, regenerative methods that honour the land and its people.

Water Stewardship

  • In a region where water is scarce, they treat every drop like gold.
  • Rainwater harvesting and retention ponds help them capture and conserve water naturally.
  • Drip and trickle irrigation ensure minimal water usage and zero runoff.
  • Wastewater is treated and reused within the farm system, closing the loop mindfully.

Energy Consciousness

  • Mharo Khet is partially powered by solar energy, reducing reliance on conventional grids.

Regenerative Farming Practices

  • They are proudly a chemical-free farm — no synthetic pesticides or fertilisers.
  • In-house composting turns farm waste into rich nourishment for the soil.
  • Bio-pesticides and natural tonics are brewed onsite using age-old recipes.
  • Crop rotation and companion planting boost soil health and biodiversity.

Modernising with Respect for Tradition

  • Their greenhouse allows them to grow non-native crops with precision-controlled humidity and temperature.
  • Traditional farming wisdom is combined with aggrotech solutions to enhance productivity responsibly.

Local Employment & Empowerment

  • They provide employment to local women and youth, many of whom have been trained in sustainable farming practices.
  • The farm supports a hyper-local supply chain, reducing food miles and fostering rural resilience.

Low-Waste Living

  • Minimal plastic use across the property, and they walk the talk - even during procurement of supplies from the market, their teams carry cloth bags so as to discourage their partners in supplying items in plastic.
  • Reusable materials, glass bottles, and cloth napkins replace disposables.
  • Guests are encouraged to participate in their ethos - from mindful water use to sustainable dining.

Giving Back

  • Portions of proceeds support community development initiatives in nearby villages, of current focus is hygiene/garbage disposal systems in the neighbouring village.
  • They regularly host educational farm tours for school children and local groups to spread awareness about environmental stewardship.
