Dwarika’s is a wonder; a wonder of restoration, preservation, creativity, skill, inspiration and endeavour. The brainchild of inspired Mr. Dwarika Das Shrestha, Dwarika’s Hotel in Kathmandu is an oasis of calm in the middle of the bustling city of Kathmandu. His aim was to preserve the architectural heritage of the region by getting skilled wood carvers to recreate exquisite past carvings and through finding and reclaiming wooden artefacts and pieces from around the country. It is a veritable feat of creation and restoration – a labour of love, a labour of architectural conservation, and a passion for the city’s history. Throughout the property are intricately carved wooden masterpieces, both original and replicated, all based on typical Newari style. The 80 fabulously large rooms and suites are spread out over 3 floors and overlook a series of beautiful inner courtyards.
They are light, lofty and boast oodles of space and light, with floor to ceiling windows looking over the courtyard or the city. Some have wonderful balconies or terraces but all are a joy to stay in. With the colours of Kathmandu predominant –red, white and black – the furnishings are rustic, chunky and wonderfully comfortable. The bathrooms are huge and have everything you want from a hotel, or even your own home. The central courtyards play host to a delightful al fresco bar and dining area and a further courtyard is home to a pretty pool area. There is a cosy covered sitting area by the lobby and an indoor dining room where you can feast delicious Nepali delicacies or eat more more global fare in Toran. This aside, whilst here you may also indulge in some Japanese hospitality at Mako’s – a superb Japanese restaurant. For those in need of some TLC, treat yourself to some pampering at the peaceful Pancha Kosha Himalayan Spa or get in trim with a hefty work out in the gym or in the yoga room – it’s all available here and is of the highest quality.
There are several shops on site selling lovely bits and pieces for those in need of a bit of retail therapy but the joy of this hotel is that you can just walk out and immerse yourself in the hubbub of Kathmandu with a plethora of historic sites just a walk or short drive away.
Now immaculately run by the 3rd generation of Shreshta’s, Dwarika’s is all about retaining and showcasing the country’s history in a traditional yet contemporary way. It is the ultimate and only boutique hotel in Kathmandu – THE place to stay.
